Frequently Asked Questions

What is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a naturally occurring compound found in cannabis and hemp plants. CBD interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system, a network of receptors and neurotransmitters that helps regulate and balance various functions such as mood, pain-perception, sleep, and inflammation. It is also thought to affect serotonin receptors, which contributes to its potential calming and anti-anxiety effects. While research is ongoing, CBD's role as a natural supplement in supporting overall well-being is widely acknowledged.

What does CBD do?

CBD is widely used in wellness products due to its potential therapeutic benefits, which are being studied for their effects on stress, sleep, pain relief and more. The compound works by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), a complex network of receptors, enzymes, and endocannabinoids that help regulate key functions like mood and immune response. Unlike THC, CBD does not directly bind to receptors. Instead, it influences them indirectly, helping to balance neurotransmitter activity and create stability. Those taking CBD, in whatever form, report feelings of calm, reduced anxiety and better sleep.

What is the difference between CBD and THC?

While both compounds are found within the cannabis plant, they behave very differently in your body. THC is psychoactive, meaning that's the one that will get you high. CBD on the other hand, will not. THC binds strongly to the receptors in the brain and nervous system, directly affecting them and leading to euphoria and altered perception, often with side affects such as paranoia and anxiety. CBD works indirectly, by enhancing the body's natural cannabinoids and is entirely legal in the UK.

Is CBD legal in the UK?

Yes, CBD is legal in the UK, but strict regulations apply. The legality of CBD products depends on THC content (must be less than 0.2%) and compliance with UK food and drug laws. All products, like Four Twentea, must hold a pre-market authorisation from the Food Standards Agency. This ensures we, like others, are adhering to high standards in terms of testing and ingredients. Whilst there is no legal limit for CBD useage in the UK, the FSA recommends starting with 10mg per day (which is one cup of tea) and not exceedeing 70mg.

Is CBD addictive?

No, CBD (cannabidiol) is not considered addictive. Studies from various health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), confirm that CBD does not exhibit addictive properties, nor does it cause dependence. As it does not create a high and the effects are more subtle, CBD is not considered a dangerous substance in terms of addiction.

How long does CBD stay in your system?

The answer to this question depends on several factors, including the dosage, how often you take it, how you take it and even something like your body fat percentage. As a rule though, when CBD is ingested orally it can stay in the body for 2 to 5 days. Taking CBD frequentally / daily means it will build up and the positive effects will be amplified. Also to remember CBD is completely legal in the UK.
